About This Course

INTRODUCTION

With every thunderstorm, there is a chance of lightning. In a year, Singapore can be struck about up to 11,500 times. Lightning tends to strike the tallest object, and Singapore has about 200 skyscrapers as well as close to 4,700 high-rise buildings. It is not uncommon for a building to be struck once, twice or even more.

Legislations are in place to ensure that all buildings are to have proper lightning protection systems installed. There is a risk of side flashing in case when the lightning energy could not be fully discharged through the earthing system. In this regard, it could get into a building’s other metallic structures and electrical systems which may lead to service disruptions, fire, damage to building structures, equipment and connected appliances as well as personal injury and fatality.

It is therefore critical that lightning protection systems are to be properly set up in compliance with SS555 COP for Protection Against Lightning and in conformity with relevant requirements for the protection of lives, properties and equipment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This short course is structured to introduce participants to lightning fundamentals, impact of lightning, relevant legislative requirements in lightning protection and S555 COP for Protection Against Lightning compliance in general principles, risk management, physical damage to structure and life hazard and electrical and electronic systems within structures.

Er. Nicholas Lee Poh Choo
PEng, BEng (Electrical), Consultant, Carlo Solutions

Er. Lee has had more than 40 yearsu2019 experience in the public utility sector holding several senior positions when he worked in SP Power Grid. He was involved in the predictive and condition-based maintenance to improve network reliability and power quality in the power distribution network. Er. Lee is experienced in the operation of power generators; as well as planning, development and management of electrical transmission and distribution networks. He had carried out consultancy works for utility companies in India, China, South Africa and the Middle East. Er. Lee obtained his degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Singapore.ore in 1972.

Mr. HC Lim

BEng, MSc (IE), LLB (Hons), BSc (Economics) Hons, P.Eng, C.Eng is Principal Consultant of Pinnacle Engineering and Management Consultancy. He also holds specialist diplomas and advanced diploma in Funds Management and administration, E-Commerce Technologies and Multimedia Development from the local polytechnics, a cer1ified diploma in Accounting and Finance from ACCA and a Graduate Certificate in Interna1ional Arbitration from the Faculty of Law, NUS. Mr Lim was Director (Contracts) of the Network Development Division, SP Power Grid before venturing into training and management consultancy services. He has had more than 30 yearsu2019 experience in the transmission and distribution network development, operations and maintenance, street lighting operations, management of safety and security units and support services for the companyu2019s operations. He is a SOP accredited adjudicator, a fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, an accredited mediator of SISV Panel of Mediators and a certified WSQ ACTA trainer and assessor.
